About Me

I was given my first camera when I was about ten years old. Before that, I would take occasional photos with the family's Box Brownie, which had a front that was prone to falling off! My interest and love of photography has continued over the years, waxing and waning according to time available, but never disappearing completely.

In the era of film, I had my own darkroom equipment and enjoyed developing and manipulating my own images. I changed to digital in 2002 and wonder now how I would manage if I was still using film! I think I would be in the bankcruptcy courts over the cost of rolls of film!

It was when I was in my early sixties that I joined a local photography club and  was encouraged by my success in the competitions. I was spurred on by some of the members who already had qualifications with the Royal Photographic Society to go for my Licentiateship of the society. I attended one of the society's advisory days with my portfolio and was amazed to be one of only a couple of photographers to be recommended to submit it for the LRPS, which I was subsequently awarded. Better late than never!

I have various special interests. Having been travelling quite a bit since 2001, I love my travel photography. I also love street photography, especially on my visits to London. Living in picturesque Devon, I also have beautiful scenery in my own area - and lots of boats, which feature quite heavily at times! And of course nature is another interest, being surrounded by it.

Although I restrict my digital enhancement to cropping and tweaking contrast etc on most of my photos, I do also enjoy playing with images and being more creative.

After years of being a Canon DSLR user, and still owning a Canon EOS 70D and lenses, in May 2021 I decided lugging heavy cameras and lenses was no longer a joy, and I took what to me felt the brave step of downgrading to a bridge camera - in my case the Sony RX10 IV. So far I am impressed with the overall results but am still learning its little foibles! But it is a joy to carry it around and have the equivalent of up to 600mm in one camera. I had previously purchased a Canon G1X III for when I didn't want to carry the weight of the DSLR and lenses around, but found that a step too far for me, and not suitable for my beloved bird photography.

I produce photo cards which I sell locally to raise money for the RNLI. For several years I have also produced local calendars in aid of the same charity.

If you would like any of my A5 cards, please use the contact form to get in touch. They are £1.70 each excluding postage.

Since I started selling the cards in 2010 I have raised £1,836.38 for the RNLI (total as at December 2024) and profits from the calendars for 2019 to 2025 have added a further £1,295. Thank you to everyone who has supported me.

2026 calendars of the Bere peninsula, where I live, will be available from September 2025 at £5.50 (plus postage if appropriate), with £1 from each calendar going to the RNLI. They are A4. Please contact me if you would like one.

I am also a musician, being the local church organist, accompanist for the local pantomime, a choir mistress and player of various instruments. But that's another story!
